Kamthieng House - the Lanna legacy in Bangkok

Kamthieng House, a traditional Lanna in the grounds of the Siam Society in Soi Asoke Bangkok preserved, the 700 100 years old Lanna architecture and culture of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

"A million rice fields"

The Lanna (a million rice fields) is a former United 13
century empire in the north of Thailand, founded by King
Mengrai in 1259, which established his capital at Chiang Mai
1291.

Captured by the Burmese in 1550 repeatedof King Taksin in
1774 was a vassal of Chiang Mai, Thailand to the rule
King Rama V, when it came under direct rule.

From this realm has grown a company with a distinct culture
and the language with its own traditions and customs, rituals
and festivals.

The family home on the Ping River

Lanna The family were steeped in this tradition
Descendants of a prince of Yunnan in southern China
migrated to northern Thailand.The matriarch Mae Nai Saed,
a great-grandson of Prince built the original
Kamthieng house in 1848 on the banks of the Ping River in
Chiang Mai.

In a matriarchal society, women are in charge Lanna
Houses, property and inheritance rights.
The family was in possession of three generations
Descendants Nai Mae Thip, Kamthieng Mae Mae and Kim
Haw, who lived in the house until 1963.

Construction of a Museum

WoodHouse, with its characteristic "Kala" or "V"
shaped wooden sculpture at the top of the eardrum, is considered
one of the rare examples of traditional Lanna architecture
Lanna Art To respect the culture for future generations, Mae Nai
Haw won a House of Siam Society as ethnological
Museum.

In memory of his mother Mae Kamthieng the museum was
Kamthieng called House.

It took two years to plan and move to dismantle the old house
ChiangIt can be rebuilt in the grounds of the Siam
Company in Bangkok. The Asia Foundation and John D
Rockefeller Foundation funded the project.

On November 21, 1966, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej
Kamthieng House officially open.

Lanna culture

A tour of Kamthieng House offers visitors an overview of
Lanna way of life, rituals, faith, family, culture, art and
Architecture.

Weaving, a traditional Lanna craftsmanship resulting from
beautifully embroidered textiles in the bedroom where
elaborate carved lintels are installed above the doors
to protect the occupants. Talismans and amulets are also

The exhibitions reflect the views of family life and community,
